Class 1 March 10 2010

In the first class we experimented with playing a C scale up the C string.

The notes went C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C we started on the open C note and finished on the 12th fret of the same string.

Students were asked to try to play a simple kids tune with this scale, going up and down one string.

In the first class we also learned about root notes. Root notes are the notes that give a chord it's name. The root note of a C chord is C. The root of a G chord is G etc.

The root notes of a chord are often played by the bass.

You can outline or sketch the chords in a song just by playing the root notes.

We did two songs in this way. With root notes only.

Jambablaya (we used the C and G note)

Dream Baby (we used the F and C  note)

These notes are the root notes of the actual chords in the song which are:

Jambablaya ( C chord and G7 chord)

Dream Baby (F and C7)

You were given the lyrics to these songs and asked to figure out where the chords go by ear. You can do this by either playing the root notes or the chords along with the recording.
